The basic theory behind this program is derived from elastic beam concepts. It calculates bending and shear stresses at any point in the plate. It can do so for isotropic materials (such as metals) as well as orthotropic (unidirectional composites and wood). The input consists of the material characteristics, the size of the plate, its thickness and the coordinates of the point at which you want to calculate the stresses.

The major limitation of this program is the fact that it is limited to small deflections (less than half the thickness). This is because beyond that membrane effects become significant and the difference between the software results and measured stresses increases. From this, it is obvious that plastic effects for metals are not taken into account.

On the whole, it is a simple program but it enables the user to take into account aspect ratio effects without referring to Timoshenko’s tables, which is why it was written in the first place.
